Being a local midwife in south auckland a lot of the women I predominantly look after are really young mums. I walk into a lot of houses that you just walk in and there are things broken everywhere. There’s no toys, there’s no cots, there’s no baby change tables, there’s no little drawers set up with clothes; it’s just normally a lounge room with a bed. My heart would just break and I’d just think “Oh man i’ve got so much, all my friends we just have so much. We’ve got no idea what it’s like for these women”. I immediately heard God just say, “look this is something you can do, so why don’t you do it”.
I guess as a midwife when I can give things to people that often they can’t have, it just lights up your whole life really. Cause when someone can’t have something and you know you can so easily give it to them, it just lights up everything in you. I guess that’s where it all comes down from, deep in the heart. It’s finding something that you love and then seeing how that can easily fit into what you do. I absolutely adore what I do. I get to be around babies, I get to be around women that are going through the most special time in their whole lives. I think deep down everybody’s just looking for love in some respect, whether it’s from a man or from family members or from children. So I think as a midwife I I feel I can give that in a way that maybe they haven’t experienced before. In a way that’s got no ulterior motives behind it, that it’s got no reciprocal rights, like they don’t have to give me anything back. I think people really wanna feel valued as well. And so being a midwife, that’s a really easy way I can show I care really easily. I can sit down and give them the time of day once a week and really spend that time with them. A verse in the bible in Romans 12 talks about just giving your ordinary life to God. Going about your daily things, eating, drinking, going to work, laying down in bed, sleeping at night. And just how you can give your life to God. Let him just take control and use him as he pleases. It’s not hard that way, when you just let God come into your life and do what you naturally love, then it just seems to walk out really easily.
I think God’s love to me is, it’s an overwhelming feeling and it is really hard to pinpoint but it’s this warmth I get inside. It’s a secure feeling, a safe feeling. A feeling where I feel really cared for. It’s an unconditional kind of love so it is really different to the loves you get in the world. I’m the first person that often lays hands on these babies so it’s a real privilege for me to be able to just say a little prayer for them. And hopefully later in their lives just pray that someday they’ll find their faith in him as well.
